Just realized my cardboard phone stand fell over 3 times because I kept taping the wrong spot
Last Tuesday I spent about two hours cutting and folding a phone stand out of an old Amazon box, and it tipped forward every time I set my phone on it. I kept adding more tape to the front edge, which made it heavier and worse, until I finally flipped the whole thing over and saw my base was only 2 inches deep while the phone leaned back 4 inches. I cut a new base 5 inches deep and it sat rock solid on the first try. The weird part is I had already sketched the base on paper and just ignored my own drawing. How do you all test balance on a mockup before taping everything shut, do you weight the base or just build it wider from the start?
The part that gets me is "I had already sketched the base on paper and just ignored my own drawing." That's the real bug here, not the tape. You solved it with your head and then let your hands outvote you. One trick nobody mentioned: test the balance with the phone off and the stand unsealed. Set the phone on the flat unfolded shape and nudge it. Tilt tells you where the weight needs to go before any tape locks it in.
