A hiring manager ripped my resume apart in 20 minutes and I'm glad she did
Back in March I sent my resume to a nurse manager at a hospital in Portland for a day shift spot I really wanted. She called me the next day and instead of an interview she offered me 20 minutes of honest feedback. She said my resume read like a job description instead of a story about what I actually do, and she quoted one line back to me: 'provided patient care in a fast paced environment.' She asked me what that even means and I had nothing. So I rewrote the whole thing. I cut the buzzwords and put in real numbers, like the 12 bed unit I ran solo on nights and the fall rate I helped cut on my floor. I also stopped listing every task and started saying what happened because I was there. Two weeks later I got called for the day shift role and I start next month. Nobody in nursing school ever taught me this stuff. What did a stranger say about your resume that you still think about?
