I turned down a $9k raise to stay at my old job and I'm second guessing it
So back in March I got two offers in the same week, which never happens to me. One was staying at my current company with a promotion (senior analyst, $9k more, plus I'd get to keep my 4 weeks of vacation and my desk by the window). The other was a smaller startup downtown that paid the same as my old salary but promised I'd "own the whole reporting stack" and get equity that might be worth something someday or might be worth nothing. I picked staying. My wife was relieved (she hates change more than I do) and honestly the first month felt great, way less stress, I already knew where the good coffee was. But now it's 5 months later and the startup just closed a Series A and two people I know there got bumped up. Meanwhile my promotion turned into basically my old job with more meetings, and my manager keeps saying the bigger projects are "coming soon." I keep replaying the choice, wondering if I played it too safe. Has anyone else picked the stable option over the risky one and actually felt okay about it later? Or did you end up leaving anyway?

What would you actually be chasing if you left, the money or the chance to build something? The startup equity is a lottery ticket, but the "own the whole reporting stack" part sounds like the real pull, and that's a thing you can sometimes get at your current place by just asking for it in writing with a date on it. Either way the regret you're feeling now is about the promise not the paycheck, so go find out if the promise is real before you decide you picked wrong.
