My mentor at a Tampa trade show said skip the 5 year plan, and I think he was right
Everyone in career threads says you need a 5 year plan mapped out, and I bought into that for a while. Then at a pest control trade show in Tampa two years ago, a guy named Ray who had been in the business for 30 years asked me where I saw myself in 5 years and I gave him my whole speech. He just laughed and said the plan would be garbage by year two anyway, so pick the next skill to get good at and let the jobs follow from there. Has anyone else had a mentor push back on the whole long term plan thing, and did it work out for you?

Ray's point about the plan being garbage by year two is the part most people miss. I worked at a company where we did yearly planning and every single year the Q3 numbers looked nothing like what we wrote down in January. In pest control it's even more true because one bad hurricane season or a new regulation can flip the whole market. So the skill thing makes way more sense than the plan thing. If you spend two years getting really good at termite inspections or commercial contracts, you can take that anywhere. The plan can't go anywhere because it's just paper.
