My old boss in Chicago said 'you're too good at your job to get promoted' and I quit the next week.

We were in his office after I asked about a lead role, and he just laid it out flat. That one line made me see the whole place was a dead end. Has anyone else had a manager say something that made you walk away for good?

Oh man, that hits home. My last manager told me I was "too valuable where I was" to move up. It was like a light switched off. I realized they were happy to keep me stuck doing the hard work forever. Packed my desk that Friday and never looked back. Good on you for getting out.

My friend's boss said the same thing, and she quit to become a manager somewhere else.

Wow, that's just brutal to hear out loud. It's like they're admitting they'd rather hurt the company than lose their best worker on a tough job. Good on you for leaving fast, because that's a place that doesn't want anyone to grow. Makes you wonder how many other people they've said that to over the years.
