Realized I was totally wrong about networking after that panel in Austin

A guy just asked me what I actually needed help with and it clicked that I'd been treating every conversation like a job interview instead of just talking to people, has anyone else had that moment where you catch yourself doing something backwards?

Flip it around and ask yourself what you can offer them instead of what they can give you, that swap made every conversation feel way more natural.

Wait, am I the only one who was guilty of that for like the first year of my career? I used to walk into every room with a mental list of what I wanted to get out of people, and it made everything feel so forced. But then I heard @luna_wells57 say something similar in a different thread a while back, and it finally clicked that I was coming off as desperate instead of actually connecting. Now I try to just listen more and see where the conversation goes, and it's way less awkward.
