Watched a guy in a suit give a career talk at the public library last Tuesday

I was at the downtown library killing time between jobs and this guy in a full suit gave a 20 minute talk on how to land a six figure job. He kept saying the key was to 'dress for the job you want' while standing in a room full of people in hoodies and jeans. Has anyone else noticed these career gurus never seem to tailor their advice to where they actually are?

Totally agree, the whole 20 minute performance seemed more about him flexing his own suit than helping anyone. Like congrats, you dressed up for a room where people are just trying to get by and maybe apply for jobs online. Career advice that ignores the actual setting and audience feels hollow every time. People need real talk about local opportunities and networking, not a fashion show with a salary figure attached.

The line about a "fashion show with a salary figure attached" is spot on. What gets me is that nobody's talking about how that kind of performance actually discourages people who are already struggling, like hey, if you can't afford a nice suit and a big network, you must not be trying hard enough. That vibe does more harm than good in a room full of folks looking for practical steps.
