A trim guy in Bakersfield asked me why I cope every inside corner and I did not have a real answer
I was helping my buddy Marco frame a garage in Bakersfield last week and he watched me cope a piece of base for ten minutes. He asked why I do it that way when a 45 miter with a little caulk would take me 30 seconds. I said it was how my first boss showed me back in 2009, and Marco just nodded and said that is not a reason. Now I am sitting here wondering how many of my habits are just stuff I never questioned. Anyone else get called out on a method and have zero defense for it?
Coping looks way better than a miter, that is just facts. A miter opens up when the wood dries out, and then you got a gap staring at you six months later. Caulk hides it for a while but paint over caulk on a joint always looks a little off. Marco might be faster but come back in two years and see whose corner still looks tight. Some habits stick around cause they actually work, not just cause the old boss said so.
