Crown molding gap in an old house, need a second opinion

I was finishing a dining room in a 1920s row house in Baltimore and hit a spot where the ceiling dips a solid half inch. I tried scribing the piece to match but it left a visible crack that my caulk made worse. Should I have used a flexible corner piece or did I mess up the cope joint? Has anyone dealt with this slope issue on plaster ceilings, what worked for you?

Own the half inch gap like a bad haircut, it aint hiding no matter how much caulk you throw at it. What worked for me was cutting a flexible backer rod strip and tucking it in the crack before using a paintable latex caulk, then wiping it smooth with a wet finger. If you nailed a rigid cope joint on a plaster ceiling that moves seasonally, you basically built a statue on a waterbed, so give the wood room to breathe and the crack all but disappears.
