Did you figure out you were using the wrong grits too? I did the same thing for years - started with 80 grit on everything and wondered why my projects looked terrible lol. Usually best to start with 120 or 150 on most stuff, then move up to 220 for finishing. And for real, don't press down hard, let the paper do the work. That was the biggest game changer for me, just using way lighter pressure.

Start with 80 grit only if you're stripping paint off a deck or trying to grind down a glob of dried glue. I still keep a stash of 80 around for those nasty jobs but yeah, using it on bare wood is basically sanding with a cheese grater. Light pressure is the real secret though. Took me way too long to learn that pushing down harder just clogs the paper faster and digs grooves you gotta sand out later.
