Guy at a supply house in Toledo handed me his kicker and I finally got why mine was wrong
I was picking up tack strip at a supply house in Toledo about 4 months ago and this older installer watched me load my kicker in the truck. He asked how long I'd been using that same one, then had me try his instead. His had a bigger head and a shorter handle, and the first stretch I did with it on a 12x14 bedroom felt totally different, way less creep coming back at me. Mine had a long handle that made me lean too far and I was fighting the carpet the whole way. What kicker setup are you all running for stairs? Mine feels fine on flat rooms but I still hate how it handles the top step.
Switched to a shorter handle last year after swearing by the long ones for a decade, and now I'd never go back. The long handle was making me lean in too far and I was pushing the carpet instead of driving it, which is why you feel all that creep come back at you. For stairs the shorter handle is even more of a must because you're working in a tight spot and need your body over the tool, not stretched out past it. The top step still sucks no matter what you run, but what helped me was choking up and taking two smaller stretches instead of trying to muscle one big one. Get yourself a kicker with a bigger head and shorter shaft and you'll wonder why you waited so long. Your back and knees will thank you.
