TIL you should cut carpet against the nap, not with it, after 6 years of doing it wrong
Did a 40 yard stretch in a Tulsa rental last month and the seams looked wavy until the homeowner's brother (30 years in the trade) showed me I was running my knife the wrong direction on the pile. Anyone got a trick for feeling the nap fast when the lighting is bad?
Cutting against the nap actually gives you a rougher seam edge on some of the newer plush stuff because the fibers grab the blade and tear instead of slicing clean. Plenty of old timers run with the nap and just swap the blade every few feet, and their seams hold up fine years later. Wavy seams usually come from a dull knife or not stretching the carpet right, not from which way you push the blade.
