My walk-in cooler died at 4pm on a Friday and the repair guy quoted me $1,800
The compressor on my 12 year old True cooler finally gave out right before dinner service on Friday, and I lost about $600 in proteins and dairy in under 3 hours. The tech said the compressor was done and quoted $1,800 for parts and labor, but a buddy of mine who runs a spot in Austin told me to always get a second opinion. Anyone here replaced a compressor on an older unit or just bit the bullet and bought new?
Man that sucks so bad, losing that much product on a Friday is brutal. Been there with a dead cooler and it always happens at the worst possible time. Twelve years on a True unit is actually a pretty good run though, so you got your money's worth out of it. $1,800 on a compressor for a unit that old feels like a lot when a new box might run you $2,500 to $3,500. I would for sure get that second opinion before dropping that kind of cash. Sometimes these techs see an old unit and just default to the most expensive fix. Get someone else to look at it, and price out a new one too so you can compare.
