Chimney brush angle debate: poly versus steel, which side do you land on?

I spent five years sweeping with a steel brush and never questioned it until a homeowner in Boise asked me why their flue tiles looked scratched, and when I checked my brush I realized I'd been ignoring the manufacturer's warning about using it on aged clay liners, so now I'm curious if anyone else has switched materials after a similar wake-up call, or do you think steel is fine if you're careful?
