Hot take: I quit using my 6 inch poly brush on clay tile flues and switched back to natural bristle after a job in Akron
Ran poly brushes for 2 years because they last longer and the guys at the supply house pushed them hard. Then last month I got called to a 1920s house in Akron with a clay tile liner. Poly brush kept sliding over the soot instead of grabbing it. Tried my old natural bristle brush and it scrubbed it off in half the passes. So poly saves money on brushes but costs you time on tile. Anyone else notice this or was my poly just worn out?
Figured out the same thing the hard way on an old colonial job a couple winters back. Poly bristles just skate across that glazed clay tile surface, especially when the soot has baked on there for decades. Natural bristle has more grab and the tips fray out so they get into the little pits and cracks the poly just glides over. Your brush probably was not worn out, that is just how they act on tile. I keep both in the truck now, poly for metal liners where it works fine, natural for clay. Costs me a few extra bucks a year but saves me an hour of cussing on every old house call.
