Saw a historic house in Savannah with a completely unlined brick chimney

The owner said it's been fine for 80 years, but I'd never risk that with modern creosote buildup. Anyone ever had to talk a homeowner into a full liner install?

My uncle's old farmhouse chimney caught fire, a real mess.

Honestly chimney fires are the worst, we had one last winter.

That story from @evana71 is exactly why it worries me. Old chimneys were built for different wood and hotter fires. Modern stoves burn cooler, and that creosote buildup is no joke. I've seen a few of those old unlined chimneys where the mortar is basically dust between the bricks from decades of acid wear. It might hold for years, or a hidden crack could let heat into the wall framing. Just feels like playing with fire, literally.
