TIL too many people still don't sweep before installing a liner

Went to a job yesterday in a old house near downtown and the homeowner had just paid someone to put in a new stainless liner. I was there for a different issue and noticed ash and soot chunks falling out of the cleanout. Pulled the cap off and there was a bird nest and about 3 inches of creosote sitting right on top of the liner. The guy who installed it just dropped it down without even running a brush through first. Now that liner is getting choked and the draft is garbage. How do you skip the most basic step and call yourself a sweep?

You said 'ash and soot chunks falling out of the cleanout' and that tells me everything. Did you happen to ask the homeowner if they actually paid a real sweep or just some guy who calls himself one? I bet they got a cheap deal off Facebook or something. A real sweep would've scoped it first and seen that mess before dropping a liner. It's stuff like this that gives the whole trade a bad name when people cut corners. I'm curious if the homeowner even knew what they were getting into or just thought a liner is a liner.
