Tried a rotary chimney brush on a 40 foot run last month, learned the hard way it's not for square flues in old Cleveland homes
Spent 3 hours fighting that thing before a guy named Pete at the supply house told me the bristles just spin on the corners and leave half the soot behind. Anyone in the trade still swear by rotary for square liners, or is it round flue only in your book?
Bought a rotary setup years ago thinking I was gonna be the smart guy and save my wrists, and I ate crow on the very first square flue I touched. Pete is right, those bristles just kiss the corners and call it a day while the flat sides get scrubbed raw. Half the soot stays put and you feel like a genius for about ten minutes. I keep the rotary for round liners only now, and square flues get the old flat wire brush on rods like my granddad used. Takes longer but at least the thing actually gets clean.
