Tried an angle grinder with a brush head for cleaning creosote
Last month I got tired of scraping by hand and grabbed a cheap angle grinder with a wire cup brush attachment. Figured it'd save me time on a heavy buildup in an old house downtown. Instead it threw sparks everywhere and I ended up with a small fire in the flue liner that I had to smother with a wet blanket. Learned my lesson about skipping the proper rotary brush setup. Any of you guys had a tool hack go wrong like that?

Funny you mention that because I used to be the guy who thought any spinning brush attachment would do the job. Before my own incident, I figured if it stripped paint and rust off metal, it could handle creosote no problem. Then I borrowed a buddy's setup and spent an hour trying to get the cup brush to not bounce off the walls or just fling dust everywhere. It left these nasty scratches in the liner that I had to sand down later. Seeing your story now, I'm glad I stopped myself from going further with that junk. Your experience locked in for me that there's a reason the proper kit costs more.

Jeez man that sounds terrifying. Did the fire damage the liner at all or were you able to clean it up okay after the blanket?
