Pro tip: always ask a new client who else is bidding on the job. One answer saved me a 3 month nightmare.
I started asking every new design client one question before I send a quote: who else is looking at this? Most people just say a name or two. But a guy in Portland gave me a weird answer. He listed 7 studios, then said his cousin was also doing a version for free. That made no sense to me since his budget was $6,000. So I asked how the cousin was involved. He got quiet and said the cousin was making his logo and website for free because family helps family. Then he asked me to match the free price but keep the full scope. I pulled out right there. Two months later a designer friend showed me the same guy's post in a local group, looking for a designer to fix the cousin's work after it fell apart. Sometimes the red flag is not the client being cheap. It is the client shopping your price against free. Has anyone else had a client try to price match against a relative doing it for nothing?
