That 8 cent plastic bag charge in Seattle actually cut my trash by a third, wish I tracked it sooner
I was reading a city waste report last month that said Seattle's bag fee pushed single use bag use down around 60 percent after it started. That number sounded fake to me so I started counting my own kitchen trash bags out of curiosity. Over 4 weeks my under sink bin went from 7 bags a week down to 4 or 5 because I just toss loose stuff in the can now and wash it out. It sounds gross but it is not, the can stays dry if you keep food scraps in a separate little tub. My wife rolled her eyes at first and now she is the one yelling at me if I forget the reusable totes in the car again. The weird part is the fee is only 8 cents but somehow that tiny sting rewired my whole routine. Has anyone else actually measured their trash going down after a bag ban or fee hit their city, or did it not change anything for you?
