Why does nobody talk about naming files like a folder tree? I renamed 400 mockups last month and my brain finally went quiet
Two years ago I started at a small studio in Grand Rapids and my desktop was a graveyard. I had files called "final2", "final FINAL", "final use this one". Stuff from 2021 was still mixed in with stuff from that morning.
Last month I got fed up after losing a homepage mockup for 40 minutes. I sat down with a coffee and renamed everything like a tree: client first, then screen, then version. So it reads like acme-home-v3.fig. Nothing clever.
It took me about six evenings after dinner. But now I can find a file by typing three letters. No search panic. I even set up the same pattern in my task app so the project name comes first there too.
Curious how other people do it. Do you put the date in the file name, or does that just make it longer for you? And does anyone sort by client or by project type? I keep going back and forth on that.
