Why does nobody warn you that a $75 label maker just makes fancier piles?
I bought a $75 label maker last spring because I thought labeling every folder and cable would finally fix my messy design files. Six weeks later I had 340 printed labels and the same chaos, because I was naming things "misc" and "stuff" just faster. What actually worked was a $0 rule: if a file does not get opened in 30 days, it goes in an archive folder, no label needed. I also stopped making subfolders inside subfolders, since I had one path that was seven folders deep just to find a logo. The label maker sits in a drawer now and I use it maybe twice a year. Has anyone else bought an organizing gadget that just moved the mess around instead of fixing it?
A label maker is just a fancy way to spell "I gave up" in Helvetica. My own version was a $40 drawer divider set that now holds exactly one thing: the dividers.
