Pro tip: a pressman in Cincinnati said stop converting my RGB blacks, and I argued with him for 20 minutes
So this goes back to a job I ran two months ago, a run of 500 flyers with a big bold black headline and a photo that had dark shadows. I built the file in RGB like always, let the rip do the conversion, and the pressman, name was Dale, looked at my proof and said pull the blacks back to rich black in CMYK before you send it or your shadows will look like mud. I told him that was old advice and that modern rips handle RGB to CMYK fine, and we went back and forth right there in the prepress room. I sent it anyway, Dale printed it anyway, and guess what, the dark areas came out flat and gray brown, nothing like what was on my screen. Had to rerun the whole batch, ate about $180 in paper and plates, and Dale just shrugged and said I told you. Here is my question for you all, when a press guy gives you advice that sounds outdated, do you push back or just try it their way first? Part of me thinks he was right because he runs the machine every day, but another part thinks RGB workflow is the future and I should not have to hand convert every file. Where do you land on this?
