Switched from RGB soft-proofing to actual CMYK profiles, huge color shift

For years I just eyeballed colors on my monitor and let the print shop handle the rest. Last month my neon green logo came out looking like swamp moss, so I finally loaded the exact ICC profile from my usual printer. Now I realize my old workflow was basically a guess, the difference in how dark and muddy shadows get is wild. I also started using their paper-specific profiles instead of the generic coated one, that changed skin tones way more than I expected. Has anyone else dealt with clients complaining about color after you switched profiles, or is that just my luck?
