Spent $65 on a used densitometer off eBay, and it caught a magenta drift my eyes never would have
I do small runs of shirts out of my garage in Boise and about two months ago I started noticing my reds were coming out a little muddy, but I could not tell if it was the ink, the shirt, or just me staring at the same design for too long. So I dropped $65 on a beat up old densitometer from eBay, the kind a print shop probably tossed in a box back in 2004, and it showed my magenta was running about 12 points hot on every single pass. My eyes had adjusted to it so slowly that I honestly thought the color was fine, and I was about one more reprint away from eating the cost on a 40 shirt order for a local bike shop. I pulled the magenta back, ran a few test swatches, and the reds snapped right back to where they should be. It is not a fancy tool, no screen, no app, you just press it on the strip and read a number, but that number does not lie to me the way my eyes do after hour three. So now I am curious, does anyone else here use a densitometer for small runs, or am I the only weirdo in my garage doing this? And if you ditched yours, what made you stop?
