PMS 300 spot color came out looking like grape jelly in Nashville

I hit a print shop in Nashville last week to pick up some business cards and noticed their wall sample of a logo where the client picked a rich blue from their monitor. The proof on the screen looked sharp, but the actual run came out almost purple, way darker than the Pantone chip. Turns out the file had no color profile embedded, so the RIP just guessed at the RGB conversion. Has anyone else had a spot color shift that bad on a simple one-color job?

Was the client even looking at a calibrated monitor before they picked that blue? Honestly, most people pick colors on uncalibrated screens, then blame the printer when the real ink hits paper. Tbh, the RIP doing a wild guess is just doing what it does when you give it nothing to work with, so the shop isn't the bad guy here.
