Grayscale proofing finally made me believe the hype

For like 8 years I rolled my eyes at anyone who said to proof in grayscale before sending stuff to press. Thought it was just extra steps for old-timers. Then last month I had a poster with a deep purple background and orange text, looked great on my monitor. The print came back looking like muddy brown soup and the orange just vanished into it. A friend at the shop in Portland told me to try a grayscale proof first, see if the contrast holds up. I did it on the redo and sure enough, the values were basically the same, so I knew to lighten the orange and darken the purple. That fix got me a clean print on the second try. Anyone else find grayscale checks catch problems that RGB previews never show?
