Just switched my tile catalog from RGB proofs to CMYK match prints and the showroom stops looking like a different store
My ceramic tile sample sheets in RGB looked crisp on the monitor, but the printed lookbook came back with muddy greens and browns that looked nothing like the real glaze. Last month I started sending the printer a CMYK match print for each sheet first, at $40 per sheet, and the difference in how the greens held up was clear right away. The RGB file was showing a range the printer simply cannot hit, so I was basically approving colors that were never going to exist on paper. That one extra proof step means I approve the actual paper color now instead of hoping the ink press guesses right. Has anyone here found a faster way to spot which swatches are going to shift worst before the match print?
A buddy of mine runs a small print shop and he had the same headache with his fabric swatch books. He started pulling up each color in Photoshop and checking the CMYK numbers against a cheap Pantone bridge book he keeps by the register. Anything where the green or orange reading dropped a bunch between the two got flagged before it ever hit the press. Took him maybe ten minutes per sheet but saved him from reprinting a whole run twice. The bridge book was like twenty bucks used, way less than eating a bad proof.
