Hot take: I blew $700 on a tool presetter and now I just touch off by hand again
Bought a used presetter about 8 months back because a guy at the shop in Dayton swore it would cut my setup time in half. Spent $700 on it plus another $150 on holders to fit it. Ran it for 3 months. Here is the thing nobody says out loud. For the parts I run, mostly one offs and small batches of 6 to 20, I was spending more time logging offsets and walking back to the machine than I was saving. Half the time the number in the log did not match what the first part actually cut anyway. Went back to a good edge finder and a test cut. My setup on a 6 piece run is about 4 minutes slower but I stopped chasing mystery offsets. Anyone else find presetters worth it only once you are doing real volume? What batch size made it pay off for you?
