Old timer at my shop showed me a tool setup trick I wish I knew years ago
We had this guy Frank who retired last month after 30 years running a Mazak. He saw me struggling to dial in a part on the Haas and just walked over, put his coffee down, and showed me how to use a test indicator to tram the head in under 2 minutes instead of my usual 15. It was at our shop in Cleveland and I still use his method every day now. Anyone else have an older machinist drop some simple knowledge like that?

Frank's the kind of guy who could fix anything with a crescent wrench and a half cup of bad coffee. Reminds me of the old timer who taught me to set tool offsets by feel instead of taking three tries with the probe. Still saves me ten minutes a day and probably a few thousand dollars in scrapped parts over the years.

You match tools to the job with that feel method, same way you learn which end of the hammer to grab when the weld breaks. Saves a lot of headaches and money down the line.
