Just discovered GitHub pages hosts for free and I feel silly

I was looking for a cheap way to put my practice projects online last week. The paid web hosting options all wanted at least $5 a month and that adds up fast when you are just learning. Then a guy at the library computer lab showed me GitHub pages. You can host a simple static site completely free right from your repository. I had been using GitHub for months to store my code but had no idea it could also show the finished product. It took me about 20 minutes to figure out the settings and now my portfolio page is live with a custom domain I bought for $12 a year. Does anyone else wish they had known about this sooner? What other free tools did you stumble on way later than you should have?

Oh man, that's a good find but I gotta ask - did you run into any weird issues with the custom domain setup? I tried doing that once and spent like 3 hours fighting DNS settings before I gave up and just used the default github.io address. Was it pretty smooth for you or did you have to mess with CNAME records and all that junk? Cause if it was actually easy I might give it another shot for my side projects. I swear the free tools always have some hidden catch that eats up your time even if it doesnt eat your money.

Fighting DNS settings for hours" sums up the free tools experience perfectly. It's like when you buy a cheap piece of furniture and spend more time fixing wobbles than sitting in it.
