My old boss said dark gray text on light gray is always fine, then my aunt could not read her own birthday card
I used to work front desk at a dental office in Tucson and my boss there, Karen, was big on soft colors. She told me dark gray text on light gray paper always looks clean and classy, never harsh like black on white. I believed her for almost 3 years. Used it on reminder cards, recall letters, even the little thank you notes we mailed out. Then my aunt turned 70 and I made her a card with light gray lettering on a pale gray background because I thought it looked fancy. She held it up, squinted, turned toward the window, and finally handed it back and said she couldn't make out a single word. She has mild cataracts, nothing extreme. That card had okay contrast on my laptop at noon but in her dim kitchen it turned into fog. Now I test everything by printing it and walking to the far side of the room. Has anyone else had a family member call out a design you thought was safe?
