A print shop owner in Des Moines told me to pick colors from thrift store paint chips, and now I get why
I was in a small print shop in Des Moines two weeks ago getting some posters made for a local show. The owner saw me scrolling through an online palette tool on my phone and laughed. She pulled out a shoebox full of old paint chips she had grabbed from a thrift store for 2 bucks and said she has used those for 12 years because screen colors lie to you. Her point was that a palette that looks good on a backlit phone can look flat and washed out once it hits paper or fabric. I tried it for a logo project last week, picking 4 colors from a beat up Sherwin Williams fan deck someone tossed out, and the client actually picked the third option instead of the usual bright blue. Has anyone else tried pulling colors from physical stuff like old paint chips or fabric swatches instead of starting on a screen?
