Finally caved and tried a cool/warm split palette after 8 years of ignoring it

I always thought that whole theory about warm and cool colors was overhyped, but I used it on a flyer for a community garden event and it made the layout pop in a way I'd never gotten before. Has anyone else had a rule they ignored for years that actually worked when they tested it?

Funny enough, that same thing happened to me with using a grid system for layouts. Always thought grids were too rigid and boring until I tried one on a garage sale flyer and everything just snapped into place without fighting it.

Nah, I still think grids kill the fun. The whole point of designing is breaking the rules a bit, seeing what happens when stuff doesn't line up. Grids just make everything feel like a boring spreadsheet.
