I started picking colors from old magazine ads and it fixed my flat designs

I was stuck making boring corporate slides for a month until I grabbed a 1970s National Geographic and copied a spread about coral reefs. Has anyone else tried pulling palettes from vintage print stuff?

Oh man, I used to think those old ads just looked faded and cheap. But then I saw this one for a 70s carpet cleaner with bright orange and lime green together, and it just clicked. They were actually trying to be bold and grab your eye, not just looking weird by accident. It's a whole different way of seeing them now.
