I finally had to pick a side on the 'brand colors vs. seasonal trends' fight for a project last week

Three years ago, I helped a small bakery in my town set up their whole look. We picked a deep plum and a warm cream as their main colors because it felt cozy and matched their vibe. It worked great. Then last month, the owner saw all these cafes using bright, zesty oranges and greens and wanted a full rebrand to look 'fresh'. I pushed back, saying their colors were part of their identity now. Last week, we had a real talk about it. I showed them how changing the main color could mess with all their printed menus and signs they just paid for. But they argued that if they don't look current, new people might not come in. It got me thinking, when do you stick with a set color palette you built, and when do you bend it to follow what's popular? Has anyone else had a client ready to toss their whole color story for a trend?

Totally get this! I just went through it with a local bookstore client. They have this perfect navy and gold look, but the owner saw a competitor using millennial pink and got nervous. We ended up adding a tiny bit of the trendy color just in their social media posts for a few months, which felt like a good middle ground.

That's the same fight every small business seems to have these days.
