TIL that my client's invoice colors made her think she owed me double
I sent a client in San Diego an invoice last Tuesday with my normal red header bar, and she called me panicked because she thought the red meant her payment was overdue. I was sitting at my kitchen table eating a sandwich when she called, and I had no idea my color choice was scaring people. So I switched the header to a soft blue-gray, added a green "paid" stamp graphic, and put a plain white background behind the total. She paid the same day, and she told me the new one felt "way less like a warning." Now I test every invoice on my wife before sending it out. Does anyone else have colors in their templates that accidentally freak people out?
My buddy Dave runs a plumbing outfit in Tucson and had the same thing happen with his orange invoice headers, customers kept calling asking if the orange meant a late fee was coming. He swapped it for a light gray and his phone got a lot quieter, people stopped reading it like a bill collector was knocking. Colors really do carry a mood whether we mean them to or not.
