Grandma's recipe cards taught me more about colorblind design than any article
My grandma left me her recipe box when she passed, and going through it last year I noticed she had a tiny system I never understood as a kid. She marked every card with different shaped symbols next to ingredients, a triangle for salt, a circle for sugar, so my grandpa who was colorblind could cook without asking her. I tried the same thing at my shop when we color code job tickets and safety tags, adding little symbols instead of just red and green dots. Two of my guys told me it was the first time they could sort tickets without asking someone which one was urgent. Has anyone else tried shape coding on stuff that used to be all color coded?
