Why I stopped relying on hue alone after my coworker's colorwheel chat
Last Tuesday my coworker Dave, who has deuteranopia, pointed out that my new chart looked identical to him in two spots even though I'd used totally different reds and greens. He showed me a quick grayscale screenshot and suddenly the data I thought was clear just disappeared into mush, which hit different because I've been designing dashboards for 5 years without ever checking that. Has anyone else switched to patterns or icons alongside color after a similar talk, and what tools do you actually use to test in that mode?

Man, this reminds me of when I printed a report in black and white for my boss and all my pie chart slices looked the same shade of gray. He just stared at it and asked if I was messing with him. Anyway yeah, testing in grayscale is a game changer, I just use a screenshot and flip it to gray in whatever photo app is open.
