People keep calling every reader a 'fan' and it's driving me crazy

I was at a con last Saturday and heard someone say 'oh you're a real comic fan' to a guy who only read Watchmen once. Being a fan means you follow a series or creator for years, not just pick up one trade paperback. How do you draw the line between a casual reader and an actual fan?

Aw man, I used to think being a fan was just about liking something. But then I dated this girl for a few months who called herself a "huge Star Wars fan" and she'd never seen anything past the original trilogy... not even the prequels. That changed my mind. You gotta have some history with it, some commitment to the thing, not just one off experience.

Ah man, I don't know @charles_henderson, does liking something really need a whole checklist?
