That guy at the comic shop changed how I see variant covers

I was at Cosmic Comics on 4th Street grabbing the new X-Men issue when the owner, this older guy named Pete, told me he thinks variant covers are just a way to make us buy the same story twice. He said he watched a kid spend $60 on three different covers of one comic last month and it hit me that I do that too sometimes. Does anyone else ever step back and wonder if we are collecting comics or just collecting the hype?

Did you read that article about the guy who spent like forty grand on comics and his wife left him? I swear I saw it on some collector forum last week. It's wild how easy it is to get caught up in the hype, especially with big events or variant covers. I mean, twelve Batman covers in one month sounds like a serious case of FOMO if you ask me. I've definitely been there myself with a different hobby years ago, just chasing that rush of getting the new thing. Hope your buddy's okay and at least kept the rent money for this month.
