Warning: This guy at the Denver Con changed how I see collecting

I was in line for a signing last year, stressing about a tiny spine tick on a book. The older guy behind me saw me looking at it and just said, 'Kid, you're buying stories, not museum pieces.' He told me about his first beat-up copy of Amazing Fantasy 15 he got as a kid for 50 cents, and how the joy was in reading it, not its grade. It really stuck with me. Do you think modern collecting has lost that feeling?

Totally. That old guy nailed it. A lot of it feels like an investment portfolio now, not a fun hobby. You see people more worried about future value than actually enjoying the thing they bought.

Look at it from the other side. For some people, the smart planning and future value is a huge part of the fun. It feels good to know your collection is growing in worth while you use it. That long term game adds a whole other layer to the hobby.

Wait, you actually use the stuff in your collection? Barbara429 made it sound like people just buy things to watch them go up in value. If you're using it, doesn't that hurt the condition and tank the future price? That seems to go against the whole investment angle they were talking about.
