Warning: This guy at the Denver Con changed how I see collecting

I was in line for a signing last year, stressing about a tiny spine tick on a book. The older guy behind me saw me looking at it and just said, 'Kid, you're buying stories, not museum pieces.' He told me about his first beat-up copy of Amazing Fantasy 15 he got as a kid for 50 cents, and how the joy was in reading it, not its grade. It really stuck with me. Do you think modern collecting has lost that feeling?

For years I torqued every bolt on a carbon frame to the spec sheet number.

A customer brought in a cracked seatpost binder area on a three year old bike, and his local shop had a record showing they'd followed the maker's 5 Nm limit each service. The carbon paste was bone dry, which made me check if we're just blindly trusting numbers over proper prep and feel. How many of you think the printed torque is a hard rule versus a starting point that needs context?
