Question about bleed lines for a local cafe menu

Last week I printed some new menus for a cafe downtown and the owner was upset because the color ran right to the edge on some copies. I realized I set the bleed at 1/8 inch instead of the 1/4 inch their printer needs. Has anyone else had a printer ask for a bigger bleed than the standard?

Oh man, I once sent a whole batch of flyers with the wrong bleed and they came back with white edges.

Printers having different bleed needs is such a headache. @caseyward that story about the flyers is my nightmare, it's so easy to mess up. Tbh I've learned to always ask for their exact specs before starting anything now, even if I think I know the standard. It saves that awful feeling of seeing a print job come back wrong.
