A deck hand in Morgan City said check the bailout before the chamber, and I blew him off
I was working a shallow job off a barge near Morgan City last spring, only 38 feet of water, so I figured I had all day to do a quick pre-dive. The deck hand kept saying check the bailout bottle first, not the chamber, but I have done this a thousand times and skipped it. About 20 minutes into the dive my umbilical snagged on a piece of scrap and I went to grab my bailout and the valve was half closed. I got one good pull off it and had to surface on my own, no chamber, no backup, no nothing. I was lucky the depth was shallow or that would have been a serious hit. Told the supervisor afterward and he just shook his head and said the deck hand has saved more divers than any doctor. Now I do the bailout check first every single time, no matter how shallow. Anyone else get humbled by a deck hand who turned out to be right?
