Hot take: my old dive buddy in Galveston said the hardest skill underwater isn't welding, it's knowing when to call the dive
I always thought that was just something old timers say to rookies, but last Tuesday I called a job at 60 feet over a ripped drysuit seal and the client thanked me for not pushing it. How do you all decide when to thumb a job versus tough it out?
Ha! My old buddy used to say the only divers who never thumb a dive are the ones who end up in the paper. I learned that one the hard way years back when I kept working a pipeline job with a mask leak. Kept telling myself it was fine, just a little water in my nose. By the time I surfaced I was puking saltwater and my regulator was full of it. Client was not happy about the redo. Now I call it early and often. My logbook looks like a quitter wrote it but at least I still got all my fingers.
