My old dive partner in Seattle said he'd rather work with a rookie who listens than a vet who won't.
We were talking about a tough salvage job last month, and he said a 20-year diver almost got them in trouble by ignoring the dive plan. It made me think hard about crew picks. Do you take the greenhorn who follows orders or the salty dog who might go off script?

My buddy in commercial diving said the same thing after a bad weld inspection. He'll take a trainee who double checks the procedure every single time.

So what happened with the bad weld?

Tell me exactly what the procedure was that got skipped. Was it a pre-heat issue, wrong rod, or just rushing it? @janahenderson's buddy has it right, a second set of eyes isn't optional for that kind of work. One missed step and you're not just looking at a redo, you're looking at a catastrophic failure down the line. This is why checklists exist.
