Unpopular opinion: soft sand is easier than rock for a rookie crew

Everyone on our barge in Galveston kept telling me rock work builds character, but we spent 6 hours on a jetty repair with too many tangled lines. Switched to a pipeline burial job in soft sand last month and the bottom time was way more manageable. Anyone else think new divers should start in mud before stone?

You ever try having a green crew fumble through boulders with surge pushing them sideways? I get where you're coming from. When I first started, we did a mud job off Louisiana and it was way easier to learn the basics without fighting the current and the rock at the same time. Soft sand lets you get your buoyancy and line handling down before you deal with the more technical stuff. Honestly, I think starting in mud saved me from quitting early on, so I'm with you on this one.
