A failing drive in a dentist's office taught me to stop trusting SMART status
Picture this: I'm in a dentist's office in Cleveland at 4:45 on a Friday, and their practice software freezes while they're checking out a patient. I pulled the drive and ran a SMART check, which came back all green, so I swapped the SATA cable and rolled out feeling like a hero. Monday morning, the drive was completely dead and they lost six months of patient records because their backup job hadn't actually run since January. I now image every drive that walks in the door before I touch anything else, no matter what the status says. Has this happened to you, and do you automatically image or just check SMART and move on?
